Summer Abroad Petition for a Program Not on Yale's Designated List

Yale Study Abroad will consider petitions for a program not on Yale's designated list on a case-by-case basis. Before starting this petition:

  1. Review the petition process in full
  2. Meet with a study abroad adviser
Only after completing these steps should you begin the petition process as outlined below.

The Summer Abroad Credit petition period opens on December 15. All petitions for Summer Abroad Credit will be reviewed after the March 1st deadline. If you will need a decision sooner, please email

As we cannot guarantee that your petition will be granted, we strongly recommend that you list a second or third-choice program from the designated list as a back-up within your petition application (question #11). Do not complete a separate Credit for Non-Yale Summer Abroad application.

Petition Process

Petitioning to study abroad in the summer involves 3 steps, which may be completed simultaneously. Do not begin any applications until you have fulfilled these steps.

  • Apply for admission to your intended program: You must apply directly to the university or program abroad you would like to attend. You can access the programs' applications directly from their websites. It is your responsibility to ensure all application materials are submitted to your desired program by the relevant deadline. Program application deadlines may be earlier or later than Yale’s petition deadline.
  • Petition for general credit for Non-Yale Summer Abroad: To petition to earn general Yale credit for a program not listed on Yale's designated list, click on the "Apply" button above and submit this petition by the appropriate deadline. Late petitions for study abroad credit cannot be accepted. You do not need to have already been admitted to your program when you petition for Yale credit.
  • Learn if you are eligible for ISA funding, and if applicable, apply for the International Summer Award: You must be earning Yale credit if you intend to use ISA funding for your summer study abroad program. This means that you must complete both the Summer Abroad Credit petition and the ISA application by the appropriate deadlines. For more information, visit the ISA website.

Application Deadlines:
